When is men’s underwear NOT men’s underwear?
When it’s men’s lingerie….
The beginning
A few years ago there was a bit of a revolution within the men’s underwear market that has
been steadily growing and as with all great revolutions change is inevitable. The change started
with how men viewed their underwear, they were throwing out their old y-fronts and tattered old boxer
shorts that they have been keeping since they were 17 and started to buy more daring and exciting
underwear , things they wouldn’t be ashamed of if they happened to get lucky on a Friday night.
No longer was underwear purely functional items but they had become part of a necessary part of the well dressed mans wardrobe.
The pinnacle
After men’s fashion underwear had been accepted into the mainstream it was time to take the revolution one step further and venture into the world of men’s lingerie.
Until recently lingerie has always been part of the women’s domain but the men’s underwear companies were not deterred by this and as always were willing to take a chance. Admittedly some of the first attempts were absolutely hideous as the men’s underwear designers had taken their inspiration from the women’s lingerie and were coming out with lacy knickers for men (if we wanted to wear lacy knickers we would be raiding our wives and girlfriends
underwear drawers when they are out), obviously you can only go so far with a mans masculinity and lacy boy knickers just weren’t it.
Fortunately companies like HOM took the bull by the horns and started designing some great men’s lingerie that not only looked sexy but also they cleverly made it BUTCH as well, from
the original Tattoo range which featured see through side panels with a tattoo effect HOM logo on one side and a WW II bomber plane inspired naked lady on the other (the tattoo
range is now in it’s 4th incarnation) to the silky smooth but ever so stylish bicolore with it’s two tone main body and horizontal pouch, HOM being a French company obviously knew a thing or two about revolutions.
So where does it all go from here? Well the answer is who knows?
A Particularly famous Frenchman Napoleon Bonaparte is quoted as saying “Revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets” and I think if Freud had a bit of a gander at that quote I’m sure he could get something sexy in there somewhere.
